Get Creative with Cupcakes

Brighten up any party with these fun treats. Watch a quick video for step-by-step instructions from Good Housekeeping.

One of the best parts of baking is the decorating. This is when you get to add your own creative touches. Here are a few simple ways to turn your cupcakes into delicious little works of art.

For cupcake designs that call for different colors of frosting, take a batch of vanilla frosting and separate it into different bowls.

Slowly stir in gel paste or liquid food coloring until it becomes your desired color.

Now, spread the frosting evenly on the cupcakes with a small metal spatula or the back of a teaspoon. If the frosting is too thick to spread, slowly stir in a little milk until it reaches the right consistency. If you don't have a pastry bag, heavyweight self-sealing plastic storage bags work as well as pastry bags for piping. Simply squeeze the frosting down into one corner and snip the tip to the desired opening size.
You can also use kitchen shears to cut shoestring licorice or fruit leather into shapes for decorating. Sprinkles, colored sugars, and chocolate curls also add a festive touch.
