Edible Urban Gardens

The trend for a healthy lifestyle has translated into the garden. Edible gardens have been around since mankind. Lately, however, many sprawling lawns are being replaced by edible landscapes. Over the next few weeks, we'll explore how this trend is playing out across the nation.

The rising cost of fresh produce coupled with the FDA's shakey regulation of the food supply has lead many to reconsider growing their own food. The tomato scare of 2008 started some on the path to home gardening.

It was a good tomato season in zone 5. Heavy spring rains were a welcomed releif from last years record drought. It seems like each tomato plant produced more tomatos than last year. Perhaps there is a way to measure the harvest results from season to season, but this ghetto gardener hasn't started any reliable method to record harvest yeilds yet.
